Chicago, IL - Ted Lilly tossed seven brilliant innings, and
Derrek Lee homered as Chicago downed Arizona, 3-1, in the opener of a three-
game set. Lilly (3-4) allowed just one run on three hits, while walking two
and fanning 10 for the Cubs, who have won two of their past three games.
Carlos Marmol threw a scoreless eighth and Kerry Wood earned his sixth save
of the year by hurling a perfect ninth to finish things. Lilly and Alfonso
Soriano drove in a run apiece for Chicago. Chris Young homered to account
for the Diamondbacks only offense. Stephen Drew, Chris Snyder and Augie
Ojeda each recorded a hit for Arizona, which has lost two of three but still
sports the best record in the big leagues, 23-13. Dan Haren (4-2) was the
hard-luck loser for the D-Backs, surrendering just two runs on five hits in
seven innings.

Pittsburgh, PA - Freddie Sanchez ripped a bouncer up the
middle to plate the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the
Pittsburgh Pirates edged the Atlanta Braves, 3-2 in the opener of a four-
game series at PNC Park. Sanchez accounted for all three RBI in leading
Pittsburgh to its fourth straight victory. Ryan Doumit added two hits in the
win. Pirates starter Ian Snell allowed just two hits and one run, while
surviving six walks in seven innings of a no-decision. Matt Grabow (2-1)
earned the win by getting out of a ninth-inning jam in his only inning of
work. The Braves had their six-game win streak snapped, as Brian McCann went
3-for-3 at the plate with a double and a walk. Jeff Francoeur knocked in both
Atlanta runs. Tom Glavine, whose last win came on September 8 last
season, threw seven quality innings, giving up two runs on five hits and
four walks while not factoring into the decision. Jeff Bennett (0-2) was
credited with the loss by only recording one out in the final inning.

Washington, DC - Luis Gonzalez stroked a three-run double and
Ricky Nolasco threw six strong innings in Florida's 7-3 win over the
Washington Nationals in the opener of a three-game series. Jorge Cantu had a
pair of hits, including a two-run single, for the Marlins, who won their
season-high fifth straight. They have beaten Washington in eight of the last
nine meetings. That includes a 4-0 mark at Nationals Park. Nolasco (2-3), who
was winless in his last four outings, allowed four hits and a run, while
walking two and striking out six. The 25-year-old right-hander moved to 4-1
lifetime against the Nationals. Cristian Guzman and Nick Johnson each had
two hits and an RBI for the Nationals, losers in three of their last four
games. They had won six of their previous seven home contests. Tim Redding
(4-3) absorbed the loss after allowing four hits and six runs -- five earned
-- over 5 1/3 innings.

Milwaukee, WI - Rickie Weeks hit a two-run single in the
bottom of the ninth inning, as the Milwaukee Brewers snapped a season-high
six-game losing streak with a 4-3 triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals. Ryan
Braun, Prince Fielder and Weeks finished with two hits apiece and Corey Hart
had a double with one run scored and one run batted in. Albert Pujols had two
hits, including his seventh home run of the season, for the Cardinals. Rick
Ankiel added two hits and a run scored for St. Louis, which has lost three
straight after winning six of seven. St. Louis closer Jason Isringhausen
(1-4) looked to be in control after Bill Hall took a one-out fastball to
center with Ankiel tracking it down just before the warning track for
the second out. J.J. Hardy singled and Gabe Kapler followed with a pinch-
hit single before Jason Kendall walked to load the bases. Weeks lined a
single to left, scoring Hardy and Kapler, setting off a celebration as the
Brewers mobbed Weeks near the mound. It was the fifth blown save of the year
and second in a row for the struggling Isringhausen. After Ryan Franklin
came on to hold the lead, retiring the Brewers in order going into the
final inning, Brian Shouse (3-0) pitched a perfect ninth to keep Milwaukee
within one. Brewers starter Manny Parra went five innings surrendering three
runs on three hits, walking three and striking out four. St. Louis starter
Todd Wellemeyer tossed six innings giving up two runs, both unearned, with no
walks and two strikeouts.
Final Score: Colorado 4, San Diego 2
San Diego, CA - Garrett Atkins went 3-for-4 with a run
batted in, as Colorado took the opener of a three-game set, 4-2, from the San
Diego Padres. Brad Hawpe ended 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI for the
Rockies, who have won three contests in a row. Matt Holliday added a solo
homer and scored twice. Aaron Cook (6-1) got the win after he pitched seven
innings and only yielded one run on three hits. Brian Fuentes earned his
fourth save of the year, despite giving up a solo homer to Kevin Kouzmanoff
in the ninth. Brian Giles hit an RBI double for the Padres, who have lost
five in a row and seven of their last eight. Kouzmanoff had a solo home run in
defeat. Jake Peavy (4-2) took the loss after he was touched for three runs
on seven hits in six frames.

San Francisco, CA - Jimmy Rollins made an immediate impact
in his return from the disabled list, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and
three RBI, as the Philadelphia Phillies rallied to down the San Francisco
Giants, 7-4, in the opener of a three-game set from AT&T Park. Cole Hamels
(4-3) gave up four runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks
over seven innings to pick up the win. Pedro Feliz went 2-for-5 with an RBI
and Carlos Ruiz knocked in two runs for the Phillies, who have won four of
their last six games. Pat Misch gave up four runs on six hits with four
strikeouts and three walks in six innings, but did not record a decision.
Tyler Walker (1-1) allowed three runs on two hits in one-third of an inning
to absorb the loss. Emmanuel Burriss was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI
for the Giants, who have dropped five straight outings. Eugenio Velez and
Fred Lewis each had an RBI, while Randy Winn finished 2-for-4 with a run
scored.

Los Angeles, CA - Lance Berkman belted a two-run homer and
Carlos Lee also drove in two runs in Houston's 7-1 win over the Los Angeles
Dodgers in the opener of a three-game series. Berkman, who had three hits, has
16 in his last 20 at-bats. Brian Moehler (1-0), making his first start
since September of 2006 when he was with Florida, threw five innings to get
the win. Moehler, who came into the game with a 7.04 ERA out of the bullpen,
started in place of the injured Wandy Rodriguez. Moehler allowed five hits,
walked one and fanned five in his scoreless appearance. Kaz Matsui had a pair
of hits with an RBI and scored twice for the Astros, who have won six of their
last seven games. Derek Lowe (2-3) surrendered eight hits and six runs over 5
1/3 innings in losing his second consecutive start. James Loney and Blake
DeWitt each had two hits for the Dodgers, losers of two straight after
winning 10 of 11. The Dodgers went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Cincinnati at New York, postponed
Flushing, NY - Friday's game between the Cincinnati Reds
and New York Mets was postponed due to rain.
The game will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on Saturday, with
the start times at 1:10 p.m. (et) and 7:40 p.m.
Cincinnati's Matt Belisle and New York's Johan Santana will start the first
game followed by the Reds' Bronson Arroyo and the Mets' Mike Pelfrey in the
nightcap.
