Flushing, NY - Carlos Beltran had a three-run triple and
knocked in five, while Carlos Delgado and Brian Schneider hit solo homers as
the New York Mets hammered the Cincinnati Reds, 12-6, in the first game
of a day/night doubleheader at Shea Stadium. Beltran finished 2-for-3 with a
walk and run scored, while Moises Alou chipped in two hits and a pair of
RBI for the Mets. Johan Santana (4-2) earned the win for the Mets, his
first at Shea. The left-hander gave up three runs on 10 hits, while fanning
five and walking a batter over six innings. Edwin Encarnacion had two hits
with a homer and two RBI, while Ken Griffey Jr. drove in a pair for
Cincinnati. Matt Belisle (1-3) went five innings, surrendering six runs --
five earned -- on seven hits, while striking out two and walking three. In the
second game, Bronson Arroyo was masterful in throwing eight innings of
one-run ball, and the Cincinnati Reds pulled away late for a 7-1 victory
over the New York Mets to salvage a split for the day. New York couldn't
get to Arroyo (2-4) in the nightcap, as the Reds starter struck out a
career-high nine while allowing just four hits and two walks. He retired the
final 13 batters he faced. Jeff Keppinger recorded his first career 5-for-5
game at the plate, scoring twice and driving in a run. Scott Hatteberg
ripped a double, two singles and three runs batted in a much-needed win for
Cincinnati, which had dropped seven of its last nine. Mike Pelfrey (2-3)
tossed a quality start for the Mets, giving up two runs on eight hits and
one walk through six innings, but the right-hander took the loss after the
offense managed just four hits. David Wright accounted for the lone RBI for
New York, which had a two-game win streak stopped.

Chicago, IL - Kosuke Fukudome hit a two-run homer and
Alfonso Soriano had four hits and an RBI as the Chicago Cubs defeated the
Arizona Diamondbacks, 7-2, in the second of a three-game set at Wrigley Field.
Soriano also scored a pair of runs, while Aramis Ramirez had two hits,
including a double and an RBI for the Cubs, who have won two straight and
three of their last four. Ryan Dempster pitched seven solid innings, but
earned a no-decision. The veteran righty allowed two runs on three hits,
while striking out seven and walking three. Scott Eyre (1-0) got the
victory by tossing a scoreless seventh. Augie Ojeda finished 2-for-3 with
a run scored and Justin Upton and Mark Reynolds accounted for the Arizona
runs. The Diamondbacks have dropped two in a row and five of their last seven
games. Max Scherzer went an effective six frames, surrendering an unearned
run on five hits. The rookie right-hander, who was making his second career
start, struck out six and walked one. Chad Qualls (0-4) was tagged with
the loss after giving up four runs on four hits in one-third of an inning.

Milwaukee, WI - Ryan Ludwick hit a two-run single in the
top of the ninth inning, as the St. Louis Cardinals snapped a season-high
three-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. St.
Louis starter Joel Pineiro allowed two runs on four hits and three walks,
striking out four through 6 1/3 innings. He loaded the bases in the seventh
before departing and was charged with two runs after Kyle McClellan walked two
with the bases loaded. Chris Duncan hit a two-run homer and Skip Schumaker had
two hits, a run scored and a run batted in. Milwaukee starter Ben Sheets
tossed seven innings of three-run ball on nine hits and one walk,
striking out six. Prince Fielder hit a game-tying home run in the eighth
and Ryan Braun had three hits for Milwaukee who lost after snapping a season-
high six-game losing streak on Friday. Eric Gagne (1-2) came on in the ninth
for Milwaukee and blew another save for the home team. Ryan Franklin got his
second save of the year in place of Jason Isringhausen who was removed
from the closer's role earlier in the day. The team announced that Franklin
and Russ Springer will share the role.

San Francisco, CA - Tim Lincecum struck out eight over
eight innings, and Jose Castillo went 4-for-4 with a double and knocked in one
run, as the San Francisco Giants trounced the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-2, in
the second of three games at AT&T Park. Randy Winn and Aaron Rowand each
had three hits, including a homer for the Giants, who snapped a five-game
losing streak. Omar Vizquel, playing in his first game of the year after
missing the first 36 while recovering from left knee surgery, went 3-for-5
and scored a run as part of San Francisco's 15-hit attack. Lincecum (5-1)
allowed just two runs on four hits while walking just one. Ryan Howard and
Chris Coste each homered for the Phillies, who are 3-3 on their seven-game
West Coast swing. Jamie Moyer (2-3) took the loss after being shelled for six
runs on nine hits in four innings.

Pittsburgh, PA - Jason Bay homered, scored two runs and
knocked in a pair to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a quick 5-2 victory over
the Atlanta Braves in the second meeting of a four-game set at PNC Park. Ronny
Paulino drove in three runs, while Jason Michaels went 3-for-4 with two runs
scored in his first start for the Pirates, who have won a season-high five
straight affairs. Starter Tom Gorzelanny (3-3) was solid in 7 1/3 innings,
scattering seven hits and two runs while striking out four, and Matt Capps
pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his ninth save for the victors. Chuck James (2-2)
was called up from Triple-A Richmond to start for Atlanta, but the left-
hander was rudely welcomed back to the big leagues, surrendering five runs on
five hits and four walks in his six innings of work. Mark Teixeira accounted
for the Braves runs with a two-run homer to highlight his 2-for-3 effort at
the plate, while Omar Infante tallied three hits for the Braves, who have
dropped two straight following a six-game winning streak.

Washington, DC - Dan Uggla hit his first career grand slam
and drove in five runs, while Andrew Miller hurled seven shutout innings as
the red-hot Florida Marlins obliterated the Washington Nationals, 11-0, in the
second of a three-game set at Nationals Park. Cody Ross homered and scored
three times for the Marlins, who are riding a six-game win streak. Wes
Helms belted a solo shot, while Jeremy Hermida knocked in a pair of
runs. Hanley Ramirez went 1-for-2, walked twice and scored twice as the
Marlins needed just 10 hits to power their onslaught. Miller (3-2) held the
Nats to just two hits, tying a career high with seven strikeouts while
issuing just one walk. Nationals starter Michael O'Connor (1-1) was
bombarded for nine runs on six hits and six walks in 3 1/3 innings. Felipe
Lopez went 2-for-4 as Washington lost for the fourth time in five games. Ryan
Zimmerman had the only other hit for the Nats.

San Diego, CA - Greg Maddux pitched six brilliant innings
to finally notch his 350th career win, as the San Diego Padres defeated the
Colorado Rockies, 3-2. Maddux (3-3), who became just the ninth pitcher in
league history to record at least 350 wins, gave up just one unearned run on
three hits in his time on the hill, lowering his ERA to 3.60. Trevor
Hoffman earned his sixth save of the year as he did not allow a hit in the
ninth. Adrian Gonzalez provided all the offense, a three-run homer in the
fourth, for the Padres, who snapped a five-game losing streak with the
victory. Willy Taveras and Omar Quintanilla knocked in a run each for
Colorado, which saw its three-game win streak halted. Ubaldo Jimenez (1-3)
got the start, but absorbed the loss after he was touched for three runs on
five hits in 6 2/3 innings of work.

Los Angeles, CA - Chris Sampson threw seven scoreless
innings, and Lance Berkman went 2-for-3 with a double, as Houston shut out the
Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-0, in the middle contest of a three-game set. Sampson
(2-3) gave up just three hits and one walk, while striking out three for the
Astros, who have won seven of eight. Michael Bourn went 2-for-5 and stole his
17th base of the season, while Darin Erstad doubled and had two RBI. Miguel
Tejada also finished with two runs batted in. Chad Billingsley (2-5) was wild
early and threw just five innings, in which he allowed five runs -- four
earned -- on six hits and a pair of walks. Matt Kemp, James Loney, and
Chin-Lung Hu had the hits for the Dodgers, who have lost three in a row and
scored two runs in the span.
