: Rapids double up RSL at home
Commerce City, CO - The Colorado Rapids claimed the top spot
in the underwhelming Western table with a 2-0 home win over Rocky Mountain
rivals Real Salt Lake on Thursday night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Major
League Soccer action.
Omar Cummings and Christian Gomez scored in the second half to lead the home
side to its fourth win of the season. With the two late tallies, the Rapids
have scored 12 of their 13 goals this season after the break.
The game started with neither team really looking like it wanted to force the
issue much, as they battled to a scoreless draw after the first 45 minutes
with no real legitimate scoring chances.
The Rapids finally broke the deadlock in the 65th minute when Colin Clark
collected the ball on the left wing, ran up sideline and fired a perfect low
cross to Cummings in the box. The Jamaican timed his run perfectly and one-
timed the chance past RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando. It was Cummings third goal
of the season, tops on his team.
Gomez added and insurance goal eight minutes from time when he fired a penalty
kick past Rimando for his second goal of the season, both were PK tallies.
The Rapids earned the chance after RSL's Matias Mantilla handled the ball in
the penalty area with Herculez Gomez pressuring.
The win is the Rapids' second in the last three league fixtures and second in
a row at home since dropping an 0-2 decision to the expansion San Jose
Earthquakes on April 19.
Colorado (4-4-0) will look to add to the win column when it hosts Chivas USA
in its nextleague fixture on May 24 while RSL (2-4-2) plays at FC Dallas
earlier the same day.
