Milwaukee, WI - Gary Bennett clubbed a three-run home run and
doubled, and Chad Billingsley fired seven-plus innings of one-run ball as the
Los Angeles Dodgers topped the Milwaukee Brewers, 7-2, in the finale of a
three-game set at Miller Park. Andruw Jones and Jeff Kent each hit solo homers
for the Dodgers, who have won two straight after five-game losing streak.
Billingsley (3-5) allowed just three hits, while striking out five and walking
four. On the day he signed an eight-year, $45 million contract, Ryan Braun
homered for the Brewers, who have lost two straight after a three-game win
streak. Ben Sheets (4-1) threw six shutout innings before imploding in the
seventh and was charged with six runs on nine hits over 6 1/3 frames.

Flushing, NY - Willie Harris made a spectacular diving catch
in left field to rob the Mets of a potential tying run in the ninth inning,
and the Nationals doubled Carlos Beltran off third base to end the game to
hold on for a 1-0 victory at Shea Stadium. Felipe Lopez hit a sacrifice fly
in the eighth, an inning after the Nationals broke up Mike Pelfrey's no-hit
bid, as Washington won three of the four games in the series. Jason Bergmann
(1-1) struck out nine over seven innings to get the victory. He allowed three
hits and walked two. Jon Rauch threw the eventful ninth inning for his ninth
save. Pelfrey (2-4) was charged with three hits and the run over 7 2/3
innings for the Mets, who have never had a no-hitter in their history. He
walked three and struck out four. Luis Castillo had two of the five hits for
the Mets, losers of two in a row.

St. Louis, MO - Jason Bay's three-run pinch-hit home run in
the eighth inning lifted the Pittsburgh Pirates past the St. Louis Cardinals
in an 11-5 comeback win at Busch Stadium in the finale of a three-game series.
Freddy Sanchez and Jason Michaels drove in two runs each for the Pirates, who
took the first and last games of the series. Doug Mientkiewicz and Chris Gomez
each had three hits and three runs scored, while Nate McLouth homered and drew
three walks. John Grabow (3-1) picked up the win with two-thirds of an inning
of scoreless relief, and the Pittsburgh bullpen combined to throw five
shutout innings behind starter Ian Snell, who allowed five runs on 11 hits in
four frames. Chris Duncan went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in and a
pair of runs scored for the Cardinals, losers in seven of their last
nine. Jason Isringhausen's (1-5) struggles continued, as he was tagged for
four runs -- three earned -- on two hits and two walks in one-third of an
inning in relief of Joel Pineiro, who surrendered four runs on six hits in
five innings.

Chicago, IL - Ryan Dempster threw into the ninth inning, had
a career-high 12 strikeouts and singled in a run, as the NL Central-leading
Cubs blanked the San Diego Padres, 4-0, in the finale of a four-game series.
Derrek Lee highlighted a four-run fifth inning with a two-run double for
Chicago, which is 6-1 on its current homestand and has captured 12 of its last
15 at Wrigley Field. Dempster (5-1), who worked the previous three years as
the closer for the Cubs, allowed six hits and one walk. He was nearing his
third career shutout, but was removed with one out in the ninth. Kerry Wood
struck out the final two batters for his eighth save. Greg Maddux (3-4) was
charged with 11 hits and four runs over 4 1/3 innings in defeat. Brian Giles
had three hits for the Padres, losers in eight of their last 11 games.

San Francisco, CA - Lance Berkman's solo homer in the ninth
inning provided the winning run, as Houston overcame a six-run deficit to top
San Francisco, 8-7, in the finale of a four-game set with the Giants. Berkman
finished 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, and remained red-hot. He has hit
safely in 13 consecutive games, and has posted a .556 batting average with
seven homers and 20 RBI in the span. Kaz Matsui went 3-for-4 with a double,
while Carlos Lee finished 3-for-5 with a solo homer and Darin Erstad
provided a pinch-hit, three-run homer for the Astros, who took three of
four games from the Giants, and have won 11 of 13. Starter Chris Sampson
allowed seven runs -- five earned -- on 10 hits in six innings, but the
Astros' bullpen threw three scoreless innings. Tim Byrdak (2-0) threw two-
thirds of an inning for the win. Omar Vizquel and Randy Winn each had three
hits, while John Bowker drove in three runs for San Francisco, which has lost
eight of 11. Giants starter Tim Lincecum was solid in six innings, as he
allowed three runs on five hits and three walks, and struck out 10. But Tyler
Walker allowed four runs in two-thirds of an inning out of the bullpen,
while Vinnie Chulk (0-2) gave up Berkman's homer and took the loss.

Philadelphia, PA - Cole Hamels went the distance for his
first career shutout and the Philadelphia Phillies launched three home runs in
defeating the Atlanta Braves 5-0 in the rubber match of a three-game series at
Citizens Bank Park. Hamels (5-3) allowed only four hits and two walks,
striking out six. He retired 16 of the first 17 batters including 15
straight for Philadelphia, which is 5-5 in its last 10 games. Ryan Howard,
Pedro Feliz and Shane Victorino all homered for the Phillies in the win.
Atlanta starter Chuck James (2-3) surrendered five runs on six hits and five
walks in just four innings. Brian McCann, Jeff Francoeur, Omar Infante and
Gregor Blanco collected the four hits for Atlanta, which is also 5-5 in its
last 10 games.

Phoenix, AZ - Brandon Webb got his major league leading ninth
win and the Arizona Diamondbacks pounded out 13 hits in completing a three-
game sweep of the Colorado Rockies, 8-5 at Chase Field. Webb (9-0) tossed 7
1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk. He struck out
eight and retired 15 of the first 16 batters for Arizona, which has won three
straight after getting swept in a three-game set at Chicago. Webb's current
nine-decision win streak tied him with Curt Schilling for the longest in
club history and is the best start to a season in franchise history.
Stephen Drew was 4-for-5 with an RBI, scoring two runs, and Orlando Hudson was
2-for-3 with two RBI, scored two runs and walked twice for the Diamondbacks.
Chris Snyder added a three-run homer for the victors. Colorado starter Aaron
Cook (6-2) went five innings allowing five runs on 10 hits and four walks.
He did strike out six for Colorado, which has now lost five straight. Clint
Barmes was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Chris Iannetta, Matt Holliday, Ryan
Spilborghs and Scott Podsednik each had an RBI for the Rockies.
Florida at Cincinnati, postponed
Cincinnati, OH - Thursday's game between the Cincinnati Reds
and Florida Marlins, the finale of a four-game series, has been postponed
because of inclement weather. A makeup date has not been set. The Reds' Matt
Belisle (1-3) had been scheduled to go against the Marlins' Andrew Miller
(3-2). As a result of the postponed game, Belisle's turn in the rotation
will be skipped, and rookie Johnny Cueto will make his scheduled start Friday
against Cleveland, as the teams open interleague play. Meanwhile, the Marlins
will push back their rotation, and Miller will get the start as Florida hosts
Kansas City on Friday.
