BASEBALL
: American League Game Capsules
Bronx, NY - Jason Giambi's solo home run in the sixth
inning proved to be the eventual game-winner as the New York Yankees completed
a three-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics with a 2-1 victory. Giambi's
round-tripper meant Andy Pettitte's brilliant outing on the hill was not
spoiled. Pettitte (11-7), known as an outstanding second-half pitcher, did
nothing but further that designation by throwing eight innings of one-run
ball. The lefty gave up just four hits with no walks and nine strikeouts.
Giambi finished 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, while Alex Rodriguez accounted
for the other RBI for New York, which has won seven straight at Yankee
Stadium. Justin Duchscherer (10-6) was the hard-luck loser, allowing two
runs on six hits and three walks to go with four strikeouts through seven
innings. The All-Star has not allowed more than two earned runs in his last
11 starts, the longest streak by an American League pitcher since Roger
Clemens completed the feat in 1990. Ryan Sweeney had two of the A's five
hits and knocked in the lone run in the club's season-high fifth straight
loss.
Final Score: Detroit 5, Baltimore 1
Baltimore, MD - Justin Verlander's three-hit, 8 2/3-inning
gem led the Tigers to a 5-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles to earn a split
in the four-game series at Camden Yards. Verlander (8-9) walked three batters
while striking out three and retiring 16 in a row between the second and
seventh innings for Detroit, which had dropped its previous two. Four Tigers
had multi-hit games including Magglio Ordonez and Marcus Thames, who both
hit solo home runs. Ryan Raburn had a pair of RBI singles while Ramon
Santiago was 2-for-4. Brian Burres (7-6) allowed three runs on six hits
and four walks in 5 1/3 innings while striking out five for Baltimore,
which has dropped four of its last six. Sunday has not been a good day for
the Orioles this season as the team has lost 15 straight games on the final
day of the week. Luke Scott had an RBI double while Aubrey Huff walked
twice and scored the home team's lone run.
Final Score: Toronto 9, Tampa Bay 4
St. Petersburg, FL - Alex Rios and Marco Scutaro each
homered and drove in three runs to help the Toronto Blue Jays avoid a three-
game sweep at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays with a 9-4 victory. The Blue
Jays bullpen combined to allow a mere two hits and two walks over six shutout
innings in relief of John Parrish, who surrendered four runs on four hits
while walking two in his three-inning start. Shawn Camp (3-1) took the win
after tossing 1 2/3 scoreless frames. Adam Lind drove in a pair of runs,
while Scott Rolen went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a pair of walks for Toronto,
which had lost three of its previous four. Evan Longoria and Carlos Pena
recorded back-to-back solo home runs for Tampa, which took the first two
games of the series after losing seven straight games. Edwin Jackson

take the loss.

Minneapolis, MN - Taylor Teagarden clubbed his first career
home run and Vicente Padilla tossed seven shutout innings, as the Texas
Rangers edged the Minnesota Twins, 1-0, in the finale of a three-game set at
the Metrodome. Padilla (11-5), who was activated from the 15-day disabled
list prior to the game, scattered three hits and walked two. The 30-year-old
had been sidelined with neck stiffness since July 5. Texas pitchers did not
allow a hit beyond the fifth. Brandon Boggs and Milton Bradley had the other
hits for Texas, which snapped a two-game losing streak. Scott Baker (6-3) was
the hard-luck loser for the Twins, allowing one run on two hits with eight
strikeouts over eight innings. Baker had won his last four decisions. Joe
Nathan gave up a hit in his one inning of work. Joe Mauer, Delmon Young and
Brian Buscher collected the hits for Minnesota, which had won seven
consecutive games at home.
Final Score: Kansas City 8, Chicago 7
Chicago, IL - Esteban German had the final say in an
offensive clinic, knocking in the game-winning runs on a double in the eighth
inning to give the Royals an 8-7 victory over the White Sox. German finished
the day 3-for-3 with the two all-important runs batted in and a run scored.
David DeJesus chipped in with three RBI and Mike Aviles added three hits to
give the Royals their fifth victory in seven games. Brian Bannister left
with the lead despite going only three innings. The righty gave up five
runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking one. Ramon Ramirez
(1-1) got the win despite giving up the lead in the seventh, surrendering
two runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings of work, while recording all of his
outs via strikeout. Joakim Soria pitched a perfect ninth for his 26th save of
the season. Nick Swisher homered and finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and two
runs scored. Joe Crede added a three-run homer, but the White Sox dropped
the final two games of the three-game series. John Danks couldn't hold the
Royals offense down, lasting only four innings on six runs and nine hits,
fanning three and walking two. D.J. Carrasco pitched three scoreless innings
on only one hit in his first game after being recalled from Triple-A
Charlotte to replace Jose Contreras, who was placed on the 15-day disabled
list before the game. Matt Thornton (4-2) received the loss after giving up
one run on one hit and a walk in the eighth inning.
Final Score: Cleveland 6, Seattle 2
Seattle, WA - Cliff Lee threw his second complete game of
the season to help the Cleveland Indians to a 6-2 win over the Seattle
Mariners, wrapping up a three-game set. Lee (13-2) gave up 11 hits and two
runs, but didn't walk any and struck out four for the Indians, who have won
six of seven. Kelly Shoppach hit a three-run home run and drove in four in the
win. Jose Vidro and Miguel Cairo each went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the
Mariners, who have dropped five of their last seven games. Carlos Silva
(4-12) had a rough outing as he gave up four runs on four hits in three-
plus innings. He left in the fourth with lower back tightness.

Anaheim, CA - Vladimir Guerrero and Torii Hunter hit back-
to-back home runs and Francisco Rodriguez picked up his 40th save of the year,
