Bronx, NY - Sidney Ponson was convincing on the mound as
the New York Yankees exploded for 16 hits, en route to crushing the Minnesota
Twins, 12-4, in the opener of a three-game set from Yankee Stadium. Ponson
(6-1) tossed 5 2/3 innings and gave up just three runs on nine hits, as the
righty moved to 7-0 in nine career home starts against the Twins. Yankees'
starters have now surrendered a stingy three earned runs or less in 10 of
their last 11 games. Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano both hit solo homers and
finished with two RBI for the Yankees, who have won four in a row overall and
eight straight in the Bronx to move a season-high nine games over .500. Alex
Rodriguez chipped in a two-run shot and finished with three RBI in the win.
Johnny Damon, activated from the DL prior to the game, went 1-for-4 with a
double, scored and drove in a run. Nick Blackburn (7-6) was roughed up for
six runs -- three earned -- on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss.
Denard Span went 3-for-4 and missed the cycle by a home run for Minnesota,
which has dropped two straight. Alexi Casilla had two RBI while Carlos Gomez
and Jason Kubel both drove in one run.

Baltimore, MD - Adam Jones and Ramon Hernandez both hit two-
run home runs as Baltimore blitzed Toronto, 8-3, in the opener of a four-game
set from Camden Yards. Melvin Mora went 2-for-4 and added the go-ahead
two-run single for the Orioles, who have won three of four. Radhames Liz
(4-2) got the win but allowed five hits and three runs, fanning four while
issuing six walks in 5 2/3 frames. Alex Rios, Rod Barajas and Scott Rolen
each knocked in a run for the Blue Jays, who have dropped three of four.
Jesse Litsch (8-7) was charged with seven hits and six runs over 4 2/3 innings
in the loss.

St. Petersburg, FL - Scott Kazmir tossed seven shutout
innings, as the Tampa Bay Rays bested the slumping Oakland Athletics, 4-0, in
the opener of a three-game set at Tropicana Field. Kazmir (8-5), the winning
pitcher for the American League in last Tuesday's All-Star Game, surrendered
two hits with nine strikeouts and four walks to pick up just his second win
in his last eight outings. Evan Longoria went 2-for-5 with a home run and two
RBI for the Rays, who have won three of their last four contests after
dropping a season-high seven straight heading into the All-Star break.
B.J. Upton was 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored, while Akinori Iwamura
finished 2-for-4 with a walk and a run batted in. Willy Aybar added a solo
home run. Dana Eveland (7-7) was saddled with the loss as he gave up four
runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts in just five innings of
work. Ryan Sweeney and Jack Cust had the hits for Oakland, which has
scored only nine runs during its season-high six-game losing streak.

Kansas City, MO - Miguel Cabrera had a 5-for-6 game with six
runs driven in and two scored as the Detroit Tigers destroyed the Kansas City
Royals, 19-4, in the opener of a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium. Detroit
tied a season-high in runs set twice earlier in the season, on April 23
against Texas and May 24 versus Minnesota. The team also cranked out 18 hits
in the win. It was the most runs Kansas City gave up this season. Matt Joyce
hit a three-run home run and finished the game 4-for-6 with five RBI and
three runs scored while Carlos Guillen scored five times and added two RBI for
the Tigers, who have won four of six. Benefiting from all the run support
was Zach Miner (4-3), who got the win in his first start of the season after
giving up just three hits in six innings of work. Luke Hochevar (6-8) was
tagged with the loss for giving up seven runs on eight hits in five innings
of work for the Royals, who had won five of seven coming into the game. Billy
Butler hit a two-run single in the loss.

Chicago, IL - Scott Feldman was solid on the mound and Josh
Hamilton belted a three-run homer, as the Texas Rangers topped the Chicago
White Sox, 6-1, in the opener of a three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field.
Recalled from Double-A Frisco prior to the game to start in place of Eric
Hurley, Feldman (4-3) gave up one run on four hits in six innings to pick up
the win. Frank Francisco, Eddie Guardado and Jamey Wright each hurled a
scoreless inning in relief. Hank Blalock hit a two-run homer for the
Rangers, who have won two straight and leapfrogged Oakland -- which was
blanked, 4-0, by Tampa Bay earlier Monday -- for second place in the AL
West. David Murphy doubled twice and scored a run, while Ian Kinsler went
0-for-4 with a run batted in. The all-star second baseman is hitless in his
last 17 at-bats following a career-high 25-game hitting streak. Javier
Vazquez (7-8) allowed three runs on four hits over seven innings to take
the loss for Chicago, which has dropped three in a row and four of five
overall. The right-hander also matched his season-high with 10 strikeouts.
Boone Logan surrendered three runs in one-plus innings of relief.

Anaheim, CA - Andy Marte and Jhonny Peralta each clubbed a
solo home run and Casey Blake added a two-run shot, as the Cleveland Indians
downed Los Angeles, 5-2, in the opener of a three-game set. Paul Byrd (4-10)
allowed one run on nine hits and struck out five over 5 1/3 innings to pick
up his first win since June 6 at Detroit. Byrd had lost each of his last
five decisions. Rafael Perez gave up one run in 2 2/3 innings of relief and
Masahide Kobayashi struck out the side in the ninth to notch his sixth save.
Grady Sizemore doubled and scored a run for Cleveland, which has won three in
a row and seven of eight overall. Ervin Santana (11-4) surrendered four runs
-- three earned -- on seven hits and fanned eight over seven frames to absorb
the loss for the Angels. The 25-year-old right-hander fell to 0-6 in
seven lifetime starts against the Indians. Howie Kendrick finished 3-
for-4 with a solo home run for Los Angeles, which snapped a five-game winning
streak.

Seattle, WA - Jon Lester combined with Jonathan Papelbon in
an eight-hit shutout as the Boston Red Sox downed the Seattle Mariners, 4-0,
in the opener of a three-game set at Safeco Field. Lester (8-3) gave up all
eight hits in 7 1/3 innings with six strikeouts for the Red Sox, who were
coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of the Angels. Jason Varitek
hit a two-run home run and Jed Lowrie drove in a pair of runs as Boston
snapped a five-game losing streak on the road. Jarrod Washburn (4-9) got the
loss as he gave up two runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings of work for the
Mariners, who have lost three straight and six of eight overall. Yuniesky
Betancourt and Adrian Beltre each had a pair of hits.
