Pittsburgh, PA - Steve Pearce and Jack Wilson got to the
Mets' bullpen in the eighth, combining to knock in three runs in the inning to
lift the Pirates to a 5-2 win over New York in the finale of a four-game set
in Pittsburgh. Wilson finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI while Adam
LaRoche contributed his 16th homer of the season, a two-run shot to help the
Pirates avoid a sweep and snap a four-game skid. Pittsburgh's Paul Maholm went
seven strong innings, giving up two runs on five hits. The Pirates' best
starter this season, Maholm struck out four and walked three in his third
consecutive quality start. Sean Burnett (1-1) earned the win after getting
out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth. John Grabow earned his fourth save
of the season, working around two walks to pitch a scoreless ninth. John
Maine didn't factor into the decision despite a good outing. The Mets'
righty threw five shutout innings on only two hits, striking out three and
walking four. The bullpen didn't fare as well, giving up all five runs on
seven hits in four innings. Pedro Feliciano (2-3) took the loss after giving
up a run in only one-third of an inning. Nick Evans went 2-for-3 with two
doubles for New York, while Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado knocked in a run
each in the loss.

Atlanta, GA - Aaron Rowand homered and drove in two runs
while Barry Zito hurled seven strong innings, as San Francisco shut down
Atlanta, 5-0, in the finale of a four-game set from Turner Field. Zito (7-15)
allowed five hits without a run, fanning three and walking two for his first
win since August 2. Rich Aurilia and Pablo Sandoval also knocked in runs for
the Giants, who took three of four in the series. Starter Jorge Campillo
(7-6) took the loss, charged with seven hits and five runs over 6 2/3 innings
while striking out two and walking one for the Braves, who have dropped seven
of their last eight.

Milwaukee, WI - CC Sabathia put together another solid
performance on the mound and Ray Durham drove in three runs, as the Milwaukee
Brewers bested the Houston Astros, 9-3, in the opener of a three-game series
from Miller Park. Sabathia (8-0) notched his fifth complete game since he was
acquired from the Cleveland Indians on July 7, allowing three runs -- two
earned -- on 11 hits with nine strikeouts. Sabathia has won a
career-high 11 straight decisions since June 10 and improved to 14-8 with a
2.99 earned run average in 27 overall starts this season. Sabathia helped
his own cause at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Durham had
three hits and scored a run for the Brewers, who have won two of their last
three games and own a 2 1/2 game lead over idle St. Louis in the NL Wild Card
standings. Corey Hart finished 3-for-4 with a solo homer, two RBI and two
runs scored. Jason Kendall was 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored.
Darin Erstad collected three hits and Reggie Abercrombie clubbed a solo home
run for Houston, which lost for just the third time in its last 12 games. Ty
Wigginton, who was named the co-National League Player of the Week (along
with New York's Johan Santana), had a solo homer to extend his hitting streak
to a career-high 15 games. Mark Loretta drove in the other Houston run. Randy
Wolf (8-11) was saddled with the loss after he gave up six runs on five hits
in just four innings of work.
