BASEBALL : Rangers' Kinsler placed on DL
Arlington, TX - Texas Rangers second baseman and American League MVP candidate Ian Kinsler was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a sports hernia, which will likely require season-ending surgery.

Coming into Monday's action, Kinsler, 26, led the majors in hits (165) and runs (102) while posting a superb .319 average with 41 doubles, 71 RBI and 26 steals, all of which have already surpassed his previous career-highs.

The All-Star suffered the injury fielding a ground ball on Sunday. Surgery would sideline Kinsler for up to eight weeks, but a second opinion will be sought before anything becomes official.

Texas recalled infielder Joaquin Arias from Triple-A Oklahoma to fill Kinsler's roster spot. The 23-year-old Arias hit .296 with seven home runs and 49 RBI in 104 games for Oklahoma this season. Arias, acquired by the Rangers along with Alfonso Soriano for Alex Rodriguez in 2004, has played just six games in the majors -- all occurring at the tail end of the 2006 campaign.
