: Bruins upset Vols in OT
Pasadena, CA - Kai Forbath kicked a 42-yard field goal in the
only overtime and the UCLA Bruins began the Rick Neuheisel era with a
thrilling 27-24 win over the 18th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers.
Kevin Craft completed 25-of-43 pass attempts for 259 yards with one touchdown
and four interceptions, all in the first half, for the Bruins (1-0), who
capped a disappointing 6-7 campaign in 2007 with a loss to BYU in the Las
Vegas Bowl. Ryan Moya had seven receptions for 65 yards and one touchdown.
"I told him (Kevin Craft) that I threw four interceptions when I started out,
too," Neuheisel said. "And Terry Donahue waited until the third game to pull
me. So I was going to be patient. He stayed in the present. The kids rallied
around him and believed in him. You could see him grow in the second half."
Jonathan Crompton passed for 189 yards on a 19-of-41 clip, including one
interception, for the Volunteers (0-1), who are coming off a 10-4 season
that included a victory over Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl. Arian Foster
rushed for 96 yards on 13 carries, while Montario Hardesty ran for 66
yards and two scores.
UCLA was down four points in the fourth quarter, but Craft put aside his first
half deficiencies to guide the Bruins on an 11-play, 80-yard drive that
culminated in a three-yard touchdown run by Raymond Carter with 6:51 left on
the clock.
The Vols then pulled ahead 21-17 on the next possession as Hardesty ran for a
20-yard score with 1:54 to play in regulation. Unfazed, Craft quickly led UCLA
down the field and put the Bruins on top when he hooked up with Moya for a
three-yard touchdown with a mere 27 seconds remaining.
Brandon Warren returned the ensuing kickoff 16 yards to the Tennessee 43. On
2nd-and-10, Crompton connected with Austin Rogers for 16 yards. An 11-yard
strike from Crompton to Luke Stocker spotted the ball at the UCLA 30 with five
seconds to play. Daniel Lincoln, who missed from 55 and 51 yards out earlier
in the game, came on and booted a 47-yard field goal to send the contest
into overtime.
In the overtime session, neither team was able to pick up a first down.
Forbath's 42-yarder split the uprights, but Lincoln missed from 34 yards.
"We made enough mistakes tonight to lose three, four or five football games,"
Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer said. "Whether it was offensively,
defensively or the kicking game...you can choose any one of them. They are
things that are fixable. I don't think we found any kind of rhythm on offense
during the course of the evening. You have to give UCLA a lot of that credit."
With both offenses scuffling early on, it was the Bruins' special teams that
opened the scoring with 1:15 remaining in the first quarter. Facing a 4th-
and-6 from their own 37, the Vols were forced to punt, but Akeem Ayers came
charging through the line to block Chad Cunningham's kick. Sean Westgate then
scooped up the ball at the 17-yard line and raced uncontested to the end zone.
Tennessee quickly tied the game on the ensuing series, marching 80 yards on
nine plays. Hardesty's 11-yard TD run capped the drive with a little over
three minutes gone in the second stanza. Nevin McKenzie put the Vols in front
with 23 seconds to go in the half when he picked off Craft and rumbled 61
yards for the score and a 14-7 lead.
Following the break, the Vols squandered a golden opportunity to build on
their lead. Tennessee moved the ball to the UCLA 6, where on 1st-and-goal
Foster lost the handle and Rahim Moore recovered the fumble for UCLA. After
the teams exchanged punts, the Bruins trimmed the deficit to 14-10 when
Forbath knocked through a 41-yarder with 1:15 to play in the third stanza.
Game Notes
The Vols own a 7-5-2 advantage in the all-time series with the Bruins...Craft,
who tossed the four picks and totaled just 66 yards in the first half, went
18-of-25 for 193 yards and one touchdown in the second half.
